Welcome to the future,
Samsung-style: a bit
like the past, only
bigger and with a few
new tricks. And why the hell not?
Last year’s Galaxy S III was hugely
successful, so giving it a moderate
upgrade and sitting back while it
sells by the bucketload makes
sense; it certainly worked for the
iPhone a couple of times.
Fortunately, there’s more to the
S4 than meets the eye. Yes, it
looks and feels strikingly similar to
its predecessor – it’s still all plastic,
albeit the fancy polycarbonate
variety – but it’s been upgraded in
every way.
It has more powerful
innards (UK S4s get a four-core
Snapdragon chip, while the
international version packs an
eight-core Samsung chip), a
bigger display with twice the
resolution, a 13MP camera and
unique talents aplenty.
But will that be enough? The
Android field is more crowded than
ever, with the likes of the Xperia Z,
HTC One and Nexus 4 raising the
bar for what a flagship phone
needs to do. And it’s not like the
iPhone has gone away either.
Looks like the S4 is going to need
every one of those new tricks…
